On the edge of the Arctic Circle, and in the midst of the real Alaska wilderness, lies one of Alaska's most modern city, Fairbanks Alaska. With a population, as of the 2010 census, of around 31,500 residents, Fairbanks is the second largest city in Alaska behind Anchorage some 358 driving miles to the south via the George Parks Highway.

Choices are many for camping opportunities in and around the Fairbanks area. There are city, state and federal campgrounds as well as privately owned and operated RV parks scattered in all directions from downtown. There are a number of camping alternatives located on the banks of the Chena River in Fairbanks. We especially enjoyed staying Chena River SRS, aka Chena Wayside. This 29-acre park sits on the banks of the Chena River off University Avenue. The 60 campsites are very clean and include 60 RV sites, 11 with electric and water hookups, there is also five walk-in campsites available. Additionally, drinking water, restrooms with flush toilets, a dump station, boat launch, and riverside trails are available for leisurely walks.

Campgrounds around Chena Hot Springs include a small campground at the Chena Hot Springs Resort. There are 24 campsites available, non with electric or water. There are also a few Yurts available for rent at the lodge campground.
